Someone uploaded or claimed my music: what do I do?

Your song was uploaded under another name, claimed on YouTube or Meta, or blocked by a rights conflict. What proof to gather and how we can help.

Start by working out which situation you're in: someone uploaded your music under another name, someone claimed your video or release, or a rights conflict is blocking your release. Each one has its own route, but they all need the same thing: proof that you own or control the recording. Gather your proof, use the store's reporting tool where there is one, and contact us so we can help with releases delivered through The Artist Platform.

What this means

Finding your music under someone else's name is upsetting. You have clear options, and we're on your side.

Three different problems can look alike:

Situation

What's going on

Where it's usually resolved

A. Someone uploaded your music

A copy of your recording is on a store under another artist's name.

With the store, through its report form. We can help for releases we deliver.

B. Your music has been claimed

Someone placed a Content ID (YouTube) or Meta claim on your video or release.

In YouTube Studio or Meta's tools. Or by us, if the claim comes from your own release.

C. A rights conflict blocks your release

Someone else already claims the same recording, so your release can't go through.

With us and the store, using your proof.

A claim isn't the same as a copyright strike. On YouTube, a claim can block, earn money from or track a video. It usually doesn't affect your channel. Strikes come from formal removal requests. YouTube's explanation

Your music stays yours when you release with us. We help protect your rights. We never take them.

When this applies

This article is for music you own or control. That means you made it, or you have written agreements or licences for it.

  • Did your release just land on the wrong artist page? That's a mix-up in the store's matching, not theft. See My release is on the wrong artist profile: how to fix it.

  • Do you and a former collaborator disagree about who owns a song? We can't decide that between you, so it's best to get independent legal advice.

We keep an eye out for you. We monitor rights dashboards for releases delivered through The Artist Platform. When a claim appears on one of your releases, we contact you.

What you need before you start

Keep this proof ready. It helps in every situation.

  • Project or session files, stems or demos, ideally with dates.

  • Links to your earlier releases of the track, with their release dates.

  • The track's ISRC and your release UPC. What are UPC and ISRC codes?

  • The copyright details you entered for the track. Track copyright information

  • Signed agreements with co-writers, producers or featured artists.

  • Licences for any samples, beats or loops.

  • Links and screenshots of the copy or claim you're reporting.

Send copies, not originals, and only what's needed.

Step-by-step

Situation A: someone uploaded your music on a store

Each store and platform has its own way to report a copy. Use the one where you found it:

Where you found it

How to report it

Spotify

Send an infringement claim through Spotify's report-content page. Spotify's guidance

Apple Music

Use Apple's music dispute form. It's for rights holders and the people who represent them.

YouTube

Send a copyright removal request. YouTube's guidance explains how.

Facebook or Instagram

TikTok

Audiomack

Use the takedown request form on Audiomack's legal page.

Boomplay

We don't have a public Boomplay report form to point you to. Send us the link and we'll tell you the options.

  1. Report the copy to the store, using the route in the table above.

  2. Use the store's voice-impersonation route if the copy imitates your voice with AI. Spotify has a separate one.

  3. Send us links to the copy, your own release, and your proof.

  4. Tell us which store or platform it's on.

Situation B: a claim on your video or release

  1. Check who made the claim. In YouTube Studio, open Content, filter for videos with claims, and choose See details.

  2. Is the claim from your own release with us? That can happen on your own YouTube or Instagram videos. Ask us to add your channel to the allowlist, so your own music stops being claimed there. How to allowlist your channels

  3. Is the claim from someone else? If you're sure you hold the rights, dispute it in YouTube Studio. YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond. Only dispute claims you're sure about, because YouTube can penalise repeated or bad-faith disputes. YouTube's guidance

  4. For Facebook and Instagram claims, send us the link and a screenshot of the claim.

Situation C: a rights conflict blocks your release

  1. Keep the release as it is. Re-uploading under a new title or artist name won't solve the conflict, and it can make it harder to fix.

  2. Send us your proof and your release UPC.

  3. We'll raise it with the store and help sort out who holds the rights.

What happens next

  • Each store and platform decides claims on its own timeline, so we can't promise a result or a date.

  • We'll tell you what we've sent and pass on any reply we get.

  • If the other side sends proof too, the store may ask both of you for more. We'll keep you updated.

Troubleshooting

Problem

What to do

I got an email from "Meta", a "lawyer" or "The Artist Music Group" asking me to log in, pay or download something

Don't click any links or pay anything. Forward the email to us through the chat in The Artist Platform. We'll tell you if it's real. See Keep your account secure: phishing and fake emails.

My own channel has a claim

Ask us to allowlist your channel. How to allowlist your channels

I disputed a claim and it was rejected

Send us the claim link and your proof before you do anything else. We'll look at your options with you.

The other side is a former collaborator

This is a disagreement about ownership, which we can't decide. Get independent legal advice, and let us know so we can pause anything needed.

My release went to the wrong artist page

I want to take my own release down

We'll work through this with you. Contact us through the chat in The Artist Platform, or see how to contact us.
