Verify your identity: when you need to and how

You need to verify your identity before you're paid, request a royalty advance or use rights tools. Here's when, how it works and how to fix problems.

Before we can pay you, we need to confirm who you are. Identity verification is a quick check, done once, by our verification partner. You can release music before you verify, but you need to be verified to receive your royalties.

What this means

Identity verification (sometimes called a KYC check) confirms that you're a real person and that your account is yours. It protects you, your royalties and other artists from fraud and false royalty claims.

Verifying doesn't prove or transfer ownership of your music. You still own your rights, and you're still responsible for the music you release.

When this applies

You need to be verified before you can:

  • receive a payout of your royalties

  • request a royalty advance

  • use rights management tools on The Artist Platform

You don't need to be verified to create and deliver a release.

Verification is available on paid plans. It isn't available during the free trial or on the free plan. If you've left a paid plan but we still owe you royalties, message us and we'll help you verify so we can pay you.

What you need before you start

  • A valid ID document: a passport, ID card or driver's licence. Check that it hasn't expired.

  • A phone with a camera, ideally. A computer with a webcam also works.

  • Good light and a few minutes.

Step-by-step

  1. Start verification. In The Artist Platform, go to Settings > Account and start your identity verification.

  2. If you started on a computer, scan the QR code with your phone's camera to continue on your phone.

  3. Take a photo of your ID document when asked.

  4. Follow the on-screen steps. Depending on the check, our verification partner may also ask for a photo or short scan of your face. The screen tells you what's needed before you begin, and any other option you can choose.

  5. Finish and wait for the result. Most checks are quick.

What happens next

  • Once you're verified, you can receive payouts and use the services that need verification. You only verify once.

  • If something changes, for example your ID expires or your details change, we may ask you to verify again.

  • If we can't complete the check, we'll tell you, and we may hold payouts until it's done.

  • Changing plan doesn't undo your verification.

Troubleshooting

What's happening

What to do

My phone won't scan the QR code

Hold your phone steady, centre the QR code and make sure there's enough light. Most phone cameras read QR codes; if yours doesn't, update your phone's software or use a free QR scanner app.

A notification appeared but nothing opened

Tap the notification or link that appears after scanning, then follow the steps on your phone.

My ID photo was rejected

Use a valid, unexpired document. Take the photo in good light, with the whole document in the frame and no glare.

I can't start verification

Look for it under Settings > Account, and check that you're on a paid plan. Verification isn't available during the trial or on the free plan.

I left my plan but you still owe me royalties
